It begins with a photograph of someone else, a vibrant orange, a sunset, and rice paddies – the prelude to a time travel journey spanning thirty years.
The work uses a photo taken by a family member in the 1990s, depicting the apartment where he temporarily stayed while working in Osaka, as a clue to unfold my journey to Osaka in 2025, retracing his former steps. I took the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka, with the train condensing the distance between the two cities into three hours. During these three hours, cityscapes and rural landscapes flashed by, stacking into blurred images, leaving only blocks of colour and lines. The dense orange of the rice paddies evoked the pattern of his bedsheets from the photograph.
He did indeed take a picture of his bed, which featured a sunset scene, and I saw it outside the train window after thirty years.
One of the photographs found in the photo album of that family member.
